Taking Care of an Outdoor AC Unit

Step 1

Before you start cleaning your outside AC unit, always turn off your AC to avoid any electrical related problems. In fact, turn off the power supply to the outdoor unit to ensure for best safety.

Clear all the dust and debris you see stuck on the unit, for instance, dry leaves, grass, etc. You may also use a vacuum cleaner to remove dirt and debris that might be there on the unit and stuck in the small gaps between the fins.

While cleaning the fins, you might notice some of them are bent or touching each other. Use a butter knife or a sleek comb to straighten them out. Now it’s time to clean it from the inside; you are able to remove the access panel from the top of the unit. This is true for most outdoor units. Step 5

As you can now see in the condenser coils, it is time to clean them by removing any dirt, debris, or buildups. You may use a garden hose but avoid using an extremely powerful one so that there is no damage to fins or coils.

Step 6

Clean the fan blades; you may use a wet rag to clean away the dust or sticky debris.

Step 7

Place the fan back in its position and do the same for the top access panel. Consider being very careful at this step, and do not leave any loose screws.
